1903 'Bless this
House'
An
early 20th century sampler. This sampler is predominately stitched in
'satin stitch' style with only the date and first letters of the verse
worked in cross stitch.
Dated 1903, the sampler has a picture of a large house surrounded by
trees and birds. Below, a verse reading;
Bless this house, O Lord we pray
Make it safe by night and day
Bless these walls, so firm and stout
Keeping want and trouble out
Below this verse are small pictures of finely dressed people also
dogs, flowers and two squirrels, all this within a trailing floral
border.
This truly is an exquisite piece, obviously crafted by a talented
individual. The condition is very good apart from the very edges of the
linen, which has been damaged by old adhesive. The damage is restricted
to at least 1.5 inches from the start of the floral border (It appears
that the sampler had been mounted at some point). It comes unframed.
Measures 16" by 12"
This one sold for $100 in
