Catherine Bailey -
memorial sampler
An Mid 19th century
memorial sampler, coarse count natural linen ground worked in cross
stitch in black. Verse within symmetrical pattern border, reads;
"In Memory of Charles Bailey Born Feb 26 1800, Died Dec 4 1866
Aged 66.
Watch I pray. For ye know not when the time is.
A Good Husband and a kind Father Dearly missed by me his ever loving
Daughter Catherine Bailey.
Lord thy will be done"
There is some history behind this sampler, records show that Charles
Bailey lived his life in the town of Surbiton, in the county of Surrey
in England.
The sampler is not dated but I can guess it was made around the time of
Charles's death, circa 1870.
The sampler is in a fantastic condition, a fine problem free example of
a Victorian memorial sampler. Comes framed and glazed and measures
15" by 11"
This sampler sold for
$190 in December 1998
