Sarah Greene - 18th century map sampler

A beautifully worked map sampler depicting all of the counties of England and Wales together with spot motifs of sailing ships and compasses, all within a border illustrating the lateral position. Worked in coloured silks on an oval shaped linen ground, this is a class example of 18th century map samplers, very typical in its design and shape. Signed and dated Sarah Greene 1783

The condition of the sampler is very good for 217 years old!, only suffering from very slight holing and some missing stitching on some of the county names. The linen is fraying at the very edges (beyond the border) where it was never hemmed. Otherwise no staining or colour run.
This truly is a lovely piece, and quite large too!.

This map sampler sold for $450 in June 1999
