Anne Isabella Hebley
1895
A huge late Victorian
sampler. This sampler measures 25 inches by 20 inches.
It is worked entirely in cross stitch using many varieties of coloured
wools. It comprises of rows of alphabets, followed by "Anne
Isabella Hebley, June 27 1895 Aged 11 years" In the centre is a
large house surrounded by many spot motifs of flowers, trees, animals
and crowns.
Below the house are two biblical verses, which read
- "Abhor that
which is evil. Cleave to that which is good. ROM 12.9."
- "Lead me to
the rock that is higher than I. PS. 61.2."
Below the verses are many
more spot motifs including a man and a woman walking dogs.
This truly is a beautiful and very colourful piece, almost naive in a
way. The condition of this piece is superb, no stains, tears or holes.
It comes framed, but there is no glazing. The frame is original and in
need of attention.
Bearing in mind the enormity of this sampler, the image shown only
represents a portion of the Sampler and from it you can gain an
impression of how colourful it is..
This one sold for $325 in
