Jane Nisbet - early
regency sampler
Stitched in both cross
stitch and eyelet stitch, this remarkable early 19th century sampler is
a lasting legacy to the skills possessed by 8 year old Jane Nisbet.
Rows of alphabets and numerals stitched in mainly blues and gold silks,
above a verse that reads
"I ask not ritches nor length of days Lord five me wisdom to
direct my ways & when this you see remember me"
Below the verse are various spot motifs of trees, crowns and symbols.
Signed at the bottom, Jane Nisbet aged 8 years. Unfortunately, Jane
didn't give a date but I would date it as between 1800 and 1820.
The Sampler comes framed and glazed in its original gold painted gilt
frame. The sampler itself in great shape, suffering from only one very
small hole measuring no greater than a third of an inch. There is no
missing stitching, no staining or any other damage. The frame is
suffering slight cosmetic damage to the top right hand corner but is
nothing that cannot be repaired.
This sampler sold for
$540 in April 1999
