Susanna Noleth - 1833
alphabet sampler
This traditional style
alphabet sampler is worked entirely in fine red silks on a linen ground,
rows of alphabets, numerals, large biblical verse which reads as
follows;
'When Life's
tempestuous storms are o'er,
how calm he meets the friendly shore,
Who liv'd averse to sin
Such peace on virtues path attends
that when the sinners pleasure ends
the good man's joys begin
No sorrow drowns his lifted eyes
No horror wrests the struggling sighs
As from the sinners breast
His God, the God of peace and love
Pours sweetest comforts from above
and soothes his heart to rest'
All of this within a
geometric border. Signed and dated 'Susannah Nolleth aged 9 years
1833'
As you may be able to see from the scan, the sampler has mild insect
damage but this does not render the sampler an eyesore!. There is no colour
run or staining, but the linen ground has aged and has an overall dark
appearance. The sampler comes without frame and glazing.
This sampler sold for
$420 in June 1999
